One of our most frequently asked
questions involves jewelry appraisals. We are proud to say
we offer this service, done professionally with quick turnaround
time. We also offer same day and while you wait appraisals.
We hope you find the information below helpful and informative.
At Smith Jewelers, Danville California
we offer dependable appraisal services provided by gemologically
trained, experienced jewelers of proven integrity. When you
need an appraisal, you need a recognized professional who
can provide accurate information and reliable documentation
of the quality and value of your jewelry. The appraisal must
meet the requirement for which it was written. We as members
of the American Gem Society (AGS) maintain the highest standards
of professionalism and adhere to the jewelry industry's most
comprehensive code of ethics. Each and every one of our appraisals
complies with the American Gem Society Appraisal Standards.
We have a Certified Gemologist Appraiser, Laurence James
Smith, on staff. The Certified Gemologist Appraiser (CGA)
title is the highest title awarded by the American Gem Society
CGAs are the only appraisers that are jewelers who deal with
the public that are required to pass a hands-on appraisal
test and a written theory examination graded by other AGS
CGAs and by instructors of the Gemological Institute of America.
Complying with the rigorous demands and standards of CGAs
and GIA instructors means the Certified Gemologist Appraiser
has demonstrated competence to peers and professionals both
within and outside of the American Gem Society.
Jewelry appraisals must include accurate gemological identification
and grading of the item appraised. Because all CGAs are also
Certified Gemologist (CGs), they have proven abilities in
gemological identification and grading to a recognized standard
of diamond, colored gemstones, pearls and gem materials. The
necessary equipment for accurate gem and metal identification
is also a requirement for the CGA. Only those CGs who have
an AGS Accredited Gem Laboratory on the site where the appraisals
are actually performed by the title holder are eligible to
become CGAs. Every GGA has passed an examination which includes
actual appraisals of many major gemstones and pearls. The
appraisal test requires accurate gemological identification
and grading. Precise descriptions of the jewelry and final
documentation and accuracy of value conclusions are determined
by sample appraisal reports which must be submitted. These
are necessary to meet the our professional standards.
We will provide you with:
- An estimated fee which is not based on the final appraised
value of the item. Our current fee is $90.00 for the first
item appraised and $60.00 for each additional item. If you
do not want to leave your jewelry item but rather have it
appraised "while you wait," we offer that service
for $125.00 per item. Please call for an appointment for
this type of appraisal.
- A professionally executed appraisal, using the methodology
warranted by the purpose of the appraisal (example: Insurance
Appraisal vs an Estate Appraisal.)
- A clearly explained description of any grading system
used for grading either diamonds or colored gemstones in
language you understand.
- Identifying plotting and/or photographs of the jewelry
items(s) appraised if warranted.
- A statement of total value applied to the appraisal in
such a way that it cannot be altered, such as with a seal
which breaks the paper fiber.
- A clear explanation of the necessary limitations of the
use of the appraisal, such as using an appraisal performed
for insurance purposes for that purpose only.
- A courteous and respectful discussion during which any
questions you have are answered. We hope the above answered
your questions about jewelry appraisals. We invite you to
call us or stop by our store or email us for more information.
